What is a zero-based budget? A zero-based budget is one where your total income minus your total expenses equals $0. In other words, it forces you to assign every dollar of income to an expense (or savings) category. As Dave Ramsey puts it, you’ll be “spending your month’s income on paper” before you spend it in real life.

How does National Consumer Panel work? Upon approval, they will send you a scanner. For a specific period of time you can your purchase. Then, you connect your scanner to the computer and download your info to National Consumer Panel once a week so that they can collect the data. This is how they get information and data on products and opinions.

What do you get out of it? You get points for EVERYTHING you scan! For each submission you earn a certain amount of points. You may also complete surveys for points. The longer you are apart of the panel the more points you accumulate. You then can trade the points for items like trips, jewerlry, electronics and more! This is kind of like Swagbucks. You can use this service to buy gifts.

I have not tried this yet but I have heard that it is fun to do with your kids! They LOVE to scan, and the points can add up! Sign up today to learn more!

How I Save on My "Fancy" Starbucks Coffee Addiction

I am on the South Beach diet. One of my favorite treats is the Non-fat sugar free Vanilla Latte at Starbucks, but I hate spending $3.34+ tax every time the mood hits me. This is how I save on my Non-fat Sugar free Vanilla Latte addiction:

I go to the StarbucksStore.com or by my local store
Buy my Espresso Roast for $10.95 for a pound (1 pound = 64 - 5 ounce cups = .17 a cup of coffee)
Buy my Sugar free Vanilla Syrup $10.95 for 1 Liter with pump (2 pumps per cup = .16 a cup of coffee)
I already own an espresso machine. If you do not already own a capuccino maker, buy a capuccino maker through the StarbucksStore.com, Amazon or your local Target or Walmart.

Starbucks vs. Savebucks at home

* $3.34 + tax vs. 40¢ for each tall vanilla latte (.17 espresso coffee + .16 for syrup + .07 for milk )

= 88% savings!

No big deal right..think again!

If you buy 1 tall vanilla latte at Starbucks once a week for a year, the cost is $173.68 + tax. If you make your own at Savebucks for a year, the cost is $20.80. It is the little things that add up! That is 88% savings!

Now whenever the mood hits me, I do not have to rush to Starbucks. There is a little trial and error, but in the end I will SAVE! To pick up more items to open your own Savebucks, go here!

Making do Monday: Making my Sofa and Loveseat more Chic than Shabby!

"Making do" is not an exciting thing to talk about. Whether you are a money saving mom, a do-it yourself dad or single lady living slim, it can be a frustrating place. Just recently while reviewing our yearly home improvements, my "supposed needs" made it to the bottom of the list due to the stage my kiddos are in, being BIG CUTE MESSES. (Just a note: I am a housewife and mother with a limited budget.) I know you may be able to relate: whether it is the terribly stained carpet in your house, furniture that look more shabby than chic, bed spread that has seen its last day or the less than fabulous backyard, you have to say no to them when your TRUE needs scream louder, like being debt free or saving for an emergency fund.

One of my sweet friends from college just posted a problem that I have, on facebook which inspired me to start this segment: Making do Mondays! Here is her facebook status:

"Kristi will never own another piece of furniture made of microfiber. easy to keep clean my rear end....My poor couch always looks worse after I try to clean it than it did with all the random stains from kids/pets/life, etc..."

My sentiments exactly! My husband and I bought this hip, modern sofa and loveseat set from Rooms to Go 5 years ago. In my opinion, they have got to go! With two kids and a dog, they look terrible. Yes, the furniture company did add scotch guard it. I have tried cleaning the blasted sofas with the fabric cleaner it came with . Every time, I clean the sofa with the cleaner they look WORSE with water marks all over my sofa and loveseat as well as the many scratches on the wood (not to mention the permanent marker stain from my budding young artist).

So now I am going to do some experimenting with advice on how to clean these sofas from different sources as well as do a little touch up work on the wood. Yes, I am going to make do. We will see if this works.

Yes, I know we face these "messes"in our life and I hope to inspire you to take action about those areas that really bug you without "breaking the bank". I will write a follow up by Monday to let you know my progress on my little "science experiment".

A sinking fund is where you save for a large, infrequent expense by saving a certain percentage a month. I am going to start saving now because I know this will be a TRUE need in the future! Just this week, I used Shop at Home to buy items to complete my children's playroom and for a rug for my back door. All of the pictures here are of items I bought! This is how I did it:

I went to Shop at Home and Ebates and did a search on Home Depot and Ballard Designs to see if these companies used either one of these services.
Shop at Home gives 3% back (6% today only) on my Home Depot Purchase (free shipping) and 6% back on my Ballard Designs Purchase.
I went through the link on Shop at Home to get to Home Depot. ($3.81 back for going through a link- $7.62 today)
I shop like normal and check out.
Did a search on Ballard Design at Shop at Home
Connected with Ballard Designs through the link on Shop at Home
Shop and Check out like normal ($9.00 back for going through their link).
I got my Fabulous Zebra Rug from Home Depot and my Burlap Drapes and French Jute Rug for my back door from Ballard Designs with $12.81 CASH BACK!

UPDATE: I HAVE BEEN REINSTATED! My frown has been turned upside down! SWAGBUCKS, you will not regret it :)

I now have my own swag word that describes my experience with swagbucks, Swagpression. Swagpression is when swagbucks finds out that your husband signed up for swagbucks 6-7 months ago and they deactivate you when it is time to receive your gift card and you are left with NOTHING! It happened on Tuesday night. I was shell shocked. My husband is not active with swagbucks. He had 9. I had close to 200 with 5 gift cards heading my way and 30 referrals. As you can imagine, this was a big blow to my dream of a FREE Christmas. I am going to take this as a learning experience and move on. I was careless, and it was my fault. I feel like my boyfriend, swagbucks broke up with me, and I have sent e-mails to them begging that they would take me back. LOL! He even took away my gift cards. Ok, I am being a little melodramatic.

Well, if you are currently with swagbucks, make sure that you:

Never have more than one person in your household sign up for swagbucks. I was careless and did not read the rules carefully. Already have 2 accounts? Contact compliance@swagbucks.com and ask them to deactivate one of your accounts. They may not have caught you yet, but when you cash in your swagbucks they will make sure you did not violate this rule. They will find out!
Do not post or list an actual swagcode ANYWHERE! You will be banned for life!
Do not search too many times within a minute. Use authentic searches or they will deactivate you and you have to beg to be reactivated.
Know the rules of the game. I would post a link but they have blocked my IP address.
