A Bike Dream!
This year our 4 year old son wanted a bike for Christmas. At the time, I was couponing and looking for the best deal on a nice bike especially since we were paying 2 mortgages at the time. I decided that I wanted to buy a bike without having to “dip into” our family budget to take the stress off of my husband.
For years, my husband has been collecting pennies from excess change that he did not want to carry around. We had a penny jar that went untouched for almost 6 years. I decided to go to the bank and ask for bankrolls to start rolling our change. I did it by hand with my son. After rolling $40 in change, something changed inside of me. Instead of looking at pennies as a nuisance that takes up too much space in my purse, I saw each penny as an opportunity to get our family one step closer to our dreams. I found myself picking up change on the street, looking through couch cushions and rummaging through our car. My mother had some excess change that my grandma had saved before she had passed away. With pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters (just like they did in the old days) we bought our son his dream bike on sale WITH A COUPON for less than $65. You cannot imagine the joy that he had on Christmas morning seeing his shiny new bike from "Santa Claus" and the joy we had knowing that we would not be paying for our splurge in January!
Today, he rides his bike almost everyday around our neighborhood with my husband.
Imagine what a story this will be to tell my son when he is saving for his first car.
Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it. The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. Proverbs 22:6-7
